THE SAFETY of motorcylists could be improved by a new group.
East Sussex Advanced Motorcyclists (ESAM) is non-profit making organisation run by trained volunteers who want to improve the safety of motorbike riders by sharpening up their driving skills.
A motorcyclist is reckoned to be 35 times more likely t
o be killed or seriously injured if they are involved in an accident and the organisation hopes to do something about that in East Sussex.
Paula Goldsmith at ESAM said: 'Spring and early summer are notoriously dangerous times for motorcyclists, with many fair-weather riders returning to our roads after the winter and along with veteran motorcyclists we are seeing a growing number of young and inexperienced riders.
'Motorcyclists are extremely vulnerable road users and we at ESAM are trying to attract as many as possible for advanced training in the hope of reducing road casualties and fatalities.
'Advanced riding is not about slowing you down on the road.
'It's about helping you to become better at predicting hazards, more adept at observing other road users and road signs and making your riding smoother, more controlled and ultimately safer.'
If you're a motorcyclist who lives in or near East Sussex, you can take advantage of the organisation's ESAM's free open days.
The organisation also meets on the second Sunday of every month at Reid Hall, Boreham Street, Nr Herstmonceux in East Sussex, between 9am and 1pm.
