Car crashes into supermarket
AN ELDERLY woman driver smashed her car into the side of Waitrose.
Firefighters were called to Lewes just after 11am today (Wednesday after smoke started billowing from the vehicle and made it safe.
The woman, who was shocked and upset but not hurt, was attended to by police and Waitrose managers.
It appeared the vehicle had driven straight on instead of turning right as it entered the store's main car park.
Police said the incident blocked the car park entrance and traffic was diverted.
A Waitrose spokesman said: 'Thankfully the customer was unharmed and praise must go the emergency services and our Partners who reacted quickly to prioritise the customer concerned and the safety of other shoppers.
'We are trading as normal, however, the affected area was immediately cordoned off while we awaited a in full safety check.'
