MEMBERS were delighted to welcome Mr. Ken Ashmore, JP, following luncheon at the Beauport Park Hotel on Wednesday, June ll, to gave detailed insights into the justice system - based upon his many years of experience.
Historically. in the 12th Century. Knights were empowered with sentencing responsibilities and in l361 the King appointed Barons, Lords and Squires as magistrates to follow a regularised law system for bridges, roads and infrastructure, plus constabl
es who enforced the rules of the land. (This was the time of ducking stools and pillories). Then, as today, no payment was received for such dedicated services.

In l832 the Great Reform Act was passed and in l850 Local Authorities picked up several responsibilities. Justices of the peace (men only) had judicial authority only. 1920 saw Ann Summers, of Stalybridge, become the first female JP and now lady magistrates number 1300.
Today Magisterial responsibility and powers deal with those who offend or are accused of offending, some JPs dealing specifically with children at risk and family proceedings.

Appropriate sentencing by J.Ps and the Crown Court under the categories of (1) the Criminal Justice System (2) Public Order Offences and (3) Either Way Offences were detailed and explained.

Members were then requested to consider various offences which Mr. Ashmore outlined and to consider what sentences they thought appropriate. This provoked much interest and discussion.

A vote of thanks expressed members' sincere appreciation for a most instructive, educational and thought-provoking talk delivered with such insight into human frailities.

The club aim is to raise funds for Cancer Research U.K. A coffee morning (bring & buy, games, raffle etc.) will be held at 123 Turkey Road, Bexhill, on Wednesday, June 25, l0.30am-noon, £2.50.

The next luncheon meeting is on July 9 when Prof. Michael Holman will talk on 'Twinning of Russian Prisons'.
