THE first meeting of the New Year for Landgate W.I. was opened by new President Jean Pearson.
Members were welcomed and introduced to this month's speaker Mr Laurie Bowman who was giving a talk on Britain's favourite topic of conversation, the weather.
No other country talks about their climate as much as Britain due to the very changeabl
e weather we get.
Mr Bowman taught for a number of years in Hastings and introduced some of the pupils he taught to the subject of meteorology.
He explained what makes our weather so variable and how to understand the weather forecasts on the television etc.
He obviously loves his subject and made it a very interesting hour for members. Joan Paul thanked him for coming to the meeting.
Refreshments were taken and the raffle drawn.
This month's competition was won by Audrey Harborough with Grace McCarthy coming second. Joan Jones and Daphne Godwin shared third place.
This year the competition is an article representing different countries.
This month was England. Gill Kirby had a birthday this month and was given a posy and card.
The minutes of the November meeting were read by Secretary Pat Hartley and agreed. Treasurer Christine Bennett read her report and reminded members that fees were due for this year.
Jean read some correspondence which included details of several bursaries on offer this year to attend Denham College.
Members were invited to enter their names with the hope that they may be picked.
The AGM will be held in the Royal Albert Hall this year on June 3.
Landgate will be represented by a delegate from Iden.
Members can attend independently if they wish but would have to cover their own costs.
The A.C.M will be at Eastbourne on the March 26.
Two members can attend this.
The arrangements for the big Federation birthday celebrations on July 6 were discussed but it is still not clear exactly what Landgate will be doing, Jean will be attending a group meeting in a few days so it may be explained a bit better then.
June Humphries asked members to come up with some new ideas for the craft group.
The craft group has been suspended until next month.
Wishing members well and looking forward to next month's meeting this meeting closed.
