RESOLUTIONS time! Madeline, delegate at the June 2008 NFWI Conference in Liverpool, gave a clear and well-informed debate of the two resolutions. Both were passed by the membership.
One was a ban on bottom trawling on certain parts of the world's ocean beds, particularly coral sea beds.
The second resolution was on inapprpriate imprisonment of the severely mentally ill. We were told of two centres of excellence, one in Liverp
ool and the other in Cheltenham. Both have excellent results.
Lack of resources is the main reason for no further places of care being set up.
One member reminded that the problem had begun by the closing of the mental health hospitals in the recent past, the burden being taken by 'Care in the Community'.
Members then enjoyed a fish and chip supper served by the committee. Many thanks to all who helped. We had fun and a good chat!
There is no Chat and Craft in May due to the Bank Holiday.
On Sunday, June 8, at 11am there is a Civic Church Service in St Mary's Church, Battle.
Elizabeth brought to our notice that the Performing Arts Festival is on the brink of collapse due to lack of audience participation. No lack of participants.
There are no plans for continuing it next year even though it is a 90th celebration year of the ESFWI.
Many members signed a letter pleading for a re- think as many WIs have a 'strong suit' in the Performing Arts and will have no show case for their efforts.
The competition for a potato head was won by Elizabeth Wright with Chris Wheeler second and Brenda Clarke third.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 11, when there is a guided talk and walk around St. Mary's Church, Battle Please meet at the church at 7.30pm where parking will be permitted.
After the tour we will retire to the St Valery Room Memorial Hall for tea and biscuits and the competition which is entitled 'Flower of the Month'.
