Battle and District Ladies Luncheon Club

AFTER a very enjoyable meal Heather Godsell gave an interesting talk titled ‘Pilgrimage’.

This entailed Heather and her daughter riding their horses from Winchester to Canterbury.

Several of the rider’s friends had died of cancer so this motivated them to do this sponsored ride for St Michaels Hospice.

A great deal of planning had to be done as they would need places to stay overnight on route and also stabling for Chance and Rossalita the horses.

Heather and her husband had driven the journey by car to suss out the pitfalls, in some cases 10 mile detours had to be made as they were unable to cross motorways and came up with a plan and places to sleep, one of these being in the back of a lorry that Heather’s brother had volunteered to drive ahead and wait as backup (definitely a family affair).

On August 31 2010 the four set out with full police escort to the city limits, from Winchester Cathedral after a blessing and letter from the Dean to be delivered to the Dean of Canterbury.

They averaged 45 miles a day and took in the most beautiful scenery that only the south of England has to offer.

On their arrival in Canterbury they were met by the Dean who received the letter and gave a blessing.

The chairman was pleased to announced that we now have a programme secretary but would like members to come up with ideas for this.

The next meeting is on Wednesday February 13 at Bannatynes Hotel, noon for 12.30pm when Gladys Stewart will be entertaining us.
