Andrew Ratcliffe, Whaltington

St Mary Magdalene Parish Church service on Sunday 13th January will be a Family Service at 10.30am in the village hall. Everybody welcome.

Thank you to Hilda Aplin for the following update on the church funds and Good Companions.

I can now let you know that the Appeal Fund has now risen to £35699.48. Can I take this opportunity of thanking all those who supported the church when they had a stall at the village hall`s Christmas Fayre. I would also like to add my thanks to Tom, John & Pat, Helene & Ted who have made generous donations over the Christmas period. I would also like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone who has donated so generously to the Appeal Fund since it was “set up” in 2010, without your help the church would not be able to finance the necessary improvements to the church, to make it more welcoming.

You will of course know that the church has already started using funds from the Appeal Fund , but I have given you the figure of the amount raised so far without deductions.

There will be no meeting of The Good Companions in January as in previous years we have had to cancel our meetings due to bad weather. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday February 27th,(late just in case of bad weather) at the Village Hall, when we will celebrate Christmas once again! This meeting will be our bring & share Christmas lunch which is usually enjoyed by all. I will be passing around the list for you to add what you would like to bring in the next few weeks. Look forward to seeing you there. May I take this opportunity of wishing you all much happiness & good health for 2013

Thank you to Steve Turner for the following book club update.

The Film Club kicks off its 2013 season with a movie that will take watchers far away from the sodden fields of Whatlington to a place where water is is in much shorter supply - the Yemen.

And it’s that shortage of rain that supplies the backdrop to the romantic comedy-drama Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, to be shown on Friday 18 January.Starring Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott-Thomas the 2012 movie tells the story of a Yemeni sheik who has a vision to bring salmon fishing to his desert kingdom for the benefit of its inhabitants. No expense is to be spared and a British fisheries expert is pressed by the British Government to accept the job of bringing angling to the parched nation.

The line-up of movies for this year is still to be decided, although the new Bond film Skyfall, along with Quartet, released this week to great acclaim, will both be on the list in coming months.

The club meets at least once a month and is open to members only. If you are interested in joining, the fee remains at just £7.50 for the year and you can get more details by contacting Steve Turner by email at steve.messages@virgin.net or by calling 01424 870041.
