Five local charities have benefited from carol concerts held at the Congress Theatre last December.
The concerts were arranged by The Rotary Club of Eastbourne and featured several local schools and other groups.

The concert choir was provided by Eastbourne Choral Society and proceeds from the concerts were distributed to representatives of the charities at a presentation in the Mayor's Parlour hosted by the mayor of Eastbourne Mary Pooley.

The five charities are Eastbourne Sea Cadet Unit, Eastbourne Association of Voluntary Services, the Eastbourne branch of Cruse Bereavement Care, Eastbourne Blind Society and the Eastbourne branch of Sussex Autistic Society. Each organisation received a cheque for £1,100.

Joining the mayor at the presentation were the president of The Rotary Club of Eastbourne, Bob Hamblyn, and other rotarians together with Liz Barker, chairman of Eastbourne Choral Society, and the chairman of the Carol Concerts Committee, rotarian Bryan Parker.

Bob Hamblyn explained that 2007 was the 43rd year in which the concerts have been held and said, "The carol concerts are a great community event and their success relies on the support of a huge number of volunteers, both the performers and also the Rotarians and others who plan and arrange the concerts each year.

"I am delighted that through their hard work enough money was raised this year to support these five charities which are so important in the town."
