The crew member suffered a blocked airway when an abscess in his throat burst while on board naval vessel, the Rheinland Pfalz.
An on-board medic contacted coastguards and explained the casualty needed to be evacuated from the ship and taken to hospital as soon as possible.
The rescue helicopter arrived at the vessel, which was at sea between Eastbourne and Hastings, at around 10am, on Saturday.
The aircraft landed in the field adjacent to Eastbourne DGH shortly afterwards.
