THUNDER, lightning and more than a third of the month's average rainfall hit Eastbourne on Wednesday night.
A total of 21.6mm of rain fell in just half an hour – the average for August is around 61mm.
Paul Quanstrom, health and environment manager at Eastbourne Borough Council, said, "I can't remember the last time we had a storm like that.
"The thunder and lightning was frequent, prolonged and very active for around an hour and a half."
Fire crews were called to a house in Stone Cross after its chimney was struck by lightning. Residents raised the alarm and crews arrived at the address in Foxes Hollow at around midnight.
An East Sussex Fire and Rescue spokesperson said the chimney did not catch fire but was loosened by the lightning strike and made safe by firefighters.
