James Doswell produced a sensational round of golf to come within a shot of the Highwoods course record.
The scratch handicapper covered the Ellerslie Lane layout in a five-under-par score of 65 in the McCarroll Flag Medal.

Doswell got off to a flying start with three birdies on the first four holes en route to a four-under-par front nine score of 3
0.

He then moved to -6 courtesy of a magnificent eagle three on the par five 11th only to miss out on a share of the record by bogeying the long uphill par four 13th.

The 21-year-old's nett 65 was three strokes better than four-handicapper Dave Monkhouse and Perry Attwood, playing off 14.

Vic Massarella and Andy Ross, both off one, shot excellent nett 69s, with the former's round enough to bring him back to playing off scratch.

Four of the top five places were therefore taken by category one golfers, surely a testament to the quality of this excellent parkland course, particularly in such wet weather.

Doswell's excellent form continued when he partnered Leanne Whent to victory in the Douglas Bader Qualifier/Ray Wood Memorial Mixed Greensomes.

Their incredible score of 49 Stableford points put them six ahead of runners-up Paul Nessling and Belinda Whent, with Gordon and Sheila Relf on 42 and Roy and Patti Stephenson on 41.

The Sidebottom Bowl awaits competitors on Saturday with entries already up to the maximum. Those who do not play well can look forward to a Queen tribute in the evening.

The Diamond Jubilee Salver is open to all members on Bank Holiday Monday.
