It was disappointment for six local golfers in their attempt to qualify for one of the sport's four majors yesterday.
Professionals Oliver Bettis, Dan Gale, Charles Giddins and Dan Lee, plus amateurs Mick Anthony and Edward Richardson failed to make it through regional qualifying for The Open Championship.

Bettis (Sedlescombe) was the pick of the bunch, narrowly
missing out on a play-off for the final three spots at Royal Ashdown Forest by one stroke after a 75.

Giddins (Beauport Park) shot an 84 at the same venue in Forest Row, while Lee (unattached) had a No Return and Anthony (Highwoods) was disqualified.

Richardson (Rye) was four shots outside the qualifying mark at Rochester & Cobham Park following a 74 and Gale (Sedlescombe) had an 80 at the same course.

The leading players from each of the 16 regional qualifiers held at venues across Great Britain and Ireland advance to local final qualifying on July 7-8.

And four players from each of the three local final qualifiers will join the world's finest at Royal Birkdale from July 17-20.

Challenge Tour player Ben Evans, from Staplecross, was eight-over-par for his two rounds in the European section of International Final Qualifying at Sunningdale on Monday.
