How lucky we are in Hastings to have such a marvellous band of volunteers.
It was great to be present at the award of 1066 just two weeks ago when Phil Cavanagh who I guess could be called a "super volunteer" was recognised by the award of 1066. For Hastings is abound with unsung heroes and what a difference their contribu
tion makes to our everyday lives.

Just last weekend I was privileged to join Judy Russell and Erica Smith at the Castle Ward Forum street clean when a score or more from the local community set about tidying the town (which of course other residents had made dirty). I then moved on to spend the morning with Diana Costin and her team of volunteers at the Barnardos Shop in Queens Road who give their time to selling all and sundry to raise money for that important cause.

The "Make a Difference" day was a special celebration of volunteering but what really impresses me is the dedication of these marvellous people who "give their time for nothing". Well not quite. People sometimes say to me why do people "give their time for nothing" and the answer is of course that they don't. Sure they don't get paid in cash but the outcomes whether it be clean streets, supporting the ending of child poverty, cancer care or a multitude of other good causes is the true reward.

But it is fun too. If anyone has an hour or two to spare and I know we all live busy lives Rose Austin at the Community Service Volunteer Bureau will be only too happy to find a task that suits your skills and aptitude. Just give her a ring on 01424 444010.

But finally as the MP I would like to simply say "thank you" to the hundreds of people who make such a difference to our lives. A simple thank you is the least we can do.
