Tributes have been paid to a Hastings philanthropist who worked tirelessly for local charities.
Eva Davis, who worked closely with Hastings Old Town Carnival Association, died on April 27 aged 88.

The pensioner, who lived at Wyvern House, Warrior Square, was born in Surrey but adopted by a Hastings family.

She spent most of her working
life in London, working in the print room at the House of Commons and during the Second World War worked for civil defence as an air raid warden.

Eva then joined the Royal British Legion (RBL) in 1968 and became a fund-raiser for the charity selling poppies until last year.

She sat on the Hastings Old Town Carnival committee for 17 years and was a member of Hastings Borough Bonfire Soiciety for 11.

Eva was also a big supporter of the Labour party and regularly canvassed for it.

Her son Geoff said: "Whenever there was an event going on she was involved in it.

"Eva was a very caring person towards her family.

"The word No came very hard to my mother. If anyone in the family or anyone from outside needed help or assistance she was always there for them.

"Her door was always open for anyone.

"She recently had cancer and had gone into hospital for surgery but did not have the strength and decided it was time to go."

Robert Morgan, chairman of Hastings Old Town Carnival Association, also paid tribute to her.

He said: "I was involved with Eva's tireless charity work as a member of the Hastings Old Town Carnival committee for seven years.

"It became a pleasure to work with people such as Eva.

"As I recall Eva's job was to contact suitable persons of the public to act as marshals to our carnival parade, a task not many would take on and especially because it was, as with other duties in carnivals, all voluntary. But then that was Eva.

"I have fond memories of a lovely lady and she will be sadly missed by many."

Eva is survived by her son Geoff, her three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who all live in Hastings.
The RNLI has flown its flag at half mast at its station in Rock-a-Nore Road in memory of Eva.

The honour guard of the RBL will also be at her funeral tomorrow(Thursday).
