Two passers-by have been hailed as heroes in helping to save the lives of a family who were asleep as a fire took hold in their home.
The pair of teenagers were walking past the house in Linley Drive at about 3am this morning (Thursday) when they heard a fire alarm.
They dialled 999 and firefighters were called to the home where they found the ground floor smoke-logged from an oven fire.
A young man asleep downstairs was rescued, suffering from smoke inhalation.
Neither he nor other family members upstairs had heard the alarm.
Watch commander Dave Thurston, of Hastings Fire Station, said: "The two passers-by who were young men aged between 16 and 18 were heroes and they put the call into the emergency services.
"They probably saved someone's life without knowing it. They could have just carried on walking but they investigated where the alarm was coming from and took action."
Firefighters extinguished the flames within minutes and smoke damage was confined to the ground floor.
The fire was caused by food left unattended in the oven.
Nobody needed medical treatment.
