A literary and literal feast

Olusha-Femi Hughes

Olusha-Femi Hughes

An evening of spoken word, poetry and African Caribbean food comes in the form of Gwyneth’s Literary Supper, at The Beacon, Hastings, tonight (Friday).

There will be readings and performances from Olusha-Femi Hughes, Amy Riley, and Jenny Abura.

Olusha-Femi Hughes is a Brighton-based poet, writer and sometime storyteller. Her work is informed by her diverse experience and background, which spans three continents. Currently writing her first novel, Olusha-Femi weaves the colourful threads of her diversity and displacement in an unfolding journey of trial and transformation.

Amy Riley is a published writer, journalist and arts and cultural PR. Her writing has appeared in national and international publications and websites. She runs award-winning story night Grit Lit and is coordinator for Sussex Black and ethnic minority group Writing Our Legacy. She has more than 15 years in the voluntary sector and is Trustee of Brighton music charity Audioactive.

Jenny Abura loves to write poetry. Her poems are a reflection of her English and Ugandan heritage. She uses words sparingly to good effect depicting events, incidents, conversations, stories and so much more.

She has written many articles about history, heritage culture and performed at various events in Brighton and Hove. Her poems have been exhibited at a family photograph exhibition in Sussex University and in Hove Town Hall.

The event starts at 7pm at The Beacon, 67-68 St Mary’s Terrace. Tickets (including three-course meal) are £22.50 on the door or £15 in advance. Entry without food is £6.50. Call 01424 431305 or 07400 384 443 to book. Visit www.afrikaba.co.uk.
