On the anniversary of VE Day, mayor of Battle Margaret Kiloh decided a particular memorial needed cleaning.

Cllr Kiloh polished the brass plate honouring Tom and Gladys Giles outside the newsagents on Battle High Street.

Tom and Gladys were both killed there by a German bomb on February 2, 1943.

Town clerk Andy Beams said they were Battle’s only civilian casualties in the second world war.

VE Day commemorates the end of World War Two in Europe.
