Bayeux Tapestry '˜finale' coming to Battle

A '˜finale' to the Bayeux Tapestry will go on display in Battle next week.

The Bayeux Tapestry tracks 58 scenes depicting events leading up to the Battle of Hastings but runs out before it reaches the conclusion, the coronation of William the Conqueror in London on Christmas Day 1066.

Many historians therefore believe that the final panel of the tapestry is missing.

Led by Kate Russell in 2012, a group of islanders from Alderney started to create a finale to the tapestry.

The four new scenes depict Duke William dining after the battle; the nobles of London submitting to William at Berkhamsted; the coronation of William and the devastation of Southwark; and finally, the construction of the White Tower (the Tower of London).

The Alderney Tapestry was completed in 2013 with more than 400 contributors including the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

As part of the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, Battle Museum of Local History will be hosting the Alderney Tapestry from September 2 until October 29.

A special talk is being provided by the Battle Museum of Local History: ‘Beyond Bayeux’ (or ‘The Tale of Two Tapestries’) on Tuesday September 6 at 7.30pm in the main hall of Battle Memorial Halls.

Kate Russell will give a talk, with illustrations, about what the Alderney islanders had in mind when they created the two ‘missing’ panels.

Tina Greene is also speaking and will describe the origins of the Battle Community Tapestry and interesting points along the way.

Tickets are £5 each and may be purchased on the door or in advance from the Battle Museum of Local History, Battle Wool Shop in Mount Street, Farrago in the High Street and the Crafty Norman on the Abbey Green.
