TWO brothers who raised more than £24,000 for charity after tragically losing their dad have been named joint winners of September’s Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award.
Tom Beckett, nine, and his eight-year-old brother Joe, who live in Battle, have helped raise money for several charities since their dad took his own life last year.
The siblings, who attend Battle and Langton CE Primary School, were supported by Hastings-based charity Dragonflies, which helps children who have suffered a bereavement.
This support led to them wanting to help others and, guided by their mum, they’ve organised charity fundraisers including parties, craft fairs and concerts, and they also ran in the junior section of the Battle 10K run.
Tom and Joe’s mum, Katie, said: “I’m so proud of my boys.
“They’ve helped me set up a fundraising body called Out of the Blue in memory of their dad, which helps raise money for three charities - Dragonflies, Beachy Head Chaplaincy and Winston’s Wish.
“The boys are keen to be involved and have assisted with several charity events.
“Dragonflies was really helpful for them as it showed them that they’re not the only ones to suffer from a bereavement.”
The Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award is sponsored by Sussex Coast College, Hastings, and the Hastings Observer Series.
Each month, the award is presented to someone aged 18 and under who has excelled in some way, perhaps in sport or their academic studies, or has performed an important role on a voluntary basis in their own home or the wider community.
Lauren Fry, marketing projects executive at Sussex Coast College Hastings, said: “Tom and Joe are inspirational boys.
“They’ve suffered a devastating loss, but despite this, have wanted to help other children in similar situations and have done so much for charity.
“It was a pleasure to meet them and present their certificate.”
As part of their award, Joe and Tom will receive a complimentary meal for two and £100 for Dragonflies.
