Brydon and BRAG
I thought I'd take a leaf out of Amber's book.
Do a bit of theatre-reviewing instead of talking about politics.
Whoa there! Before the Commentariat goes crazy, I know that's not entirely fair. There was a good bit of Tory tub-thumping in her column yesterday!
Maybe it's the exception that proves the rule, or the turning point after which we might hear a bit more about Conservative Party policy. Let's see.
Anyway, I've had it in mind to write about Rob Brydon at the White Rock Theatre for a little while, but events have intervened. It was a chance conversation with one of our esteemed local reporters about Leslie Grantham and the Hastings panto that reminded me to have my twopenneth...
Well it's not an earth-shattering point that I want to make. Just that I was overjoyed to see the White Rock jam-packed on a wet Wednesday night. Testimony to the fact that if we get the right calibre of performer down in Hastings then the White Rock Theatre will be able to shore up its future as a commercial concern.
Brydon is really quite a talented man. I would say at least half of his material was done on the back of banter with the audience.
Probably a bit pre-prepared but hilarious nonetheless. And (I know that I am going to sound a bit old-fashioned on this) it was lovely to be laughing without hearing an f-word every other clause!
Can I manage a seamless switch from this to Monday night's meeting of the Bexhill Rail Action Group?
Probably not, but it is absolutely true that this umbrella group, at whose meetings rail activists from across our constituency discuss our rail infrastructure and how it can be improved, boasts some equally talented characters in their respective fields of expertise.
I had gone at the invitation of Martin Woodfine, the Hastings rep and co-founder of SHRIMP (the St Leonards and Hastings Rail Improvement Programme) – always good to have a catchy acronym!
Did you know, by the way, that GLASS is an acronym?
Glycerine, lime, ash, sand and sulphur.
(As every good St Helens lad will tell you, but I digress...]
BRAG has been a leading light in the campaign to stop Network Rail in its dastardly plan of cutting the London Charing Cross service to Hastings in 2015.
They have also been active in respect of demanding the Javelin trains for Hastings & Rye.
We absolutely must improve our rail infrastructure – not just because it will be better for the environment, but because it is a key aspect of any successful regeneration and tourism strategies for our constituency.
Lib Dems understand this, which is why our transport, environment and fiscal policies are so integrated.
BRAG gets my vote. I hope that we Lib Dems will get theirs.
