POLICE are urging members of the public to be on the look-out for anyone tampering with telephone boxes, after a spate of over 30 incidents across the county this month.
During March officers received reports in Hastings and Bexhill and there are fears it could spread to the rural area,
PC Andy Lawrence, from the Response Investigation Team, said: “Phone boxes provide a valuable service to the community. The damage caused during the thefts is costly to repair and could cause inconvenience to members of the public.
“Sussex Police are working closely with BT and an investigation is underway to find those responsible. I am urging anyone who sees anything suspicious or anyone who appears to be damaging public telephones or stealing from them to please contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Cordless or anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
