Crowhurst Post Office to close in spring

Crowhurst Post Office is to close in the spring, it was announced today.

The branch received official notice of the closure this afternoon, with Post Office bosses saying Crowhurst will shut for good 'no earlier than March 11'.

Postmaster Don Barham said: "I feel disappointed, but it was not unexpected, I'm afraid."

Villagers and people who use the Crowhurst branch made their voices heard during the six-week public consultation period, which closed on Christmas Eve.

The Post Office says the main concerns raised were the impact of the proposed closure on vulnerable customers, including pensioners, irregular transport services and the cost of travelling to alternative branches.

In the Post Office Network Programme Area Plan Decision Booklet - Sussex, published today, it said: "The nearest alternative branch, Catsfield Post Office, has longer opening hours, offers a wider range of services and has ramp access into the branch.

"There is public transport available, with disabled access available on some buses.

"Alternatively there is parking on the road outside the branch.

"Having regard to these and all other relevant factors, Post Office Ltd has decided to proceed with the closure of this branch."
