Pupils' gingerbread creations win top prize in decoration competition

The school was given a Christmas tree and tasked with making decorations.

School cook Miriam, who comes from Slovakia, told the children about the tradition in her country of making gingerbread figures and icing them. The children decided to decorate their tree according to Slovakian tradition.

Forms 3 and 4 worked on designs for the biscuits and children from throughout the school rolled out the dough, cut the shapes and decorated the gingerbread.

Next term the children involved in the school council will decide how to spend the prize money.

Clive Collins of Catsfield Christmas Tree Farm said: “We had a number of entries but the gingerbread decorations were a clear winner. We loved that all the children were involved and that they were inspired by a tradition from another country and were very impressed when we saw the finished tree.”

Charters Ancaster deputy head Angela Kinzett added: “It was a fantastic competition that involved so many elements. The children spent time thinking about shapes and colours and coming up with designs.

“What we noticed is that children were stopping to look at the tree, talking about the biscuits and looking for any they have decorated.

“They have taken ownership of the tree and its decorations, so thank you Catsfield Christmas Tree Farm for starting us on a very interesting and successful journey leading up to Christmas.”
