FOUR fire crews tackled a blaze which started in a semi-detached house on the A259 at Icklesham on Wednesday night.
A crew from the Ridge firestation at hastings were first on the scene, just after 9pm, and were assisted by firefighters from Hastings.
The family occupying the house managed to get out safely after a neighbour smelled smoke and raised the alarm.
Firefighters using eight breathing apparatus brought the blaze under control and were on the scene until 12.15am.
It is not known yet how the fire started but it was accidental and not suspicious say the Fire Service.
A fire service spokesperson said: “The building was smoke-logged and there was extensive smoke damage.
“We would remind people of the importance of installing smoke alarms and checking them regularly.”
