If Jim Davidson ruled the world - heaven forbid

In recent weeks the Observer has championed the apparent new direction being taken by the White Rock Theatre.

Shows like Woman in Black, Blood Brothers and Richard Herring's hilarious Hitler Moustache have hinted at a more sophisticated, less End of the Pier style approach from the town's number one venue.

However, money still needs to be made and tickets still need to be sold. I can think of no other reason for the theatre to book Jim Davidson than that he all but guarantees a near sell-out show.

The self-proclaimed King of Controversy brings his If I Ruled The World show to 1066 Country next month (Saturday, July 31) and, regardless of what I say, tickets will be snapped up as quickly as the England tat being flogged in shops across town.

Nodding British bulldog for the car? Check. Huge inflatable spitfire? Check. Two tickets to Jim Davidson? Check.

The official blurb promoting the show says it is "sure to excite his ever growing band of faithful squires, and their ladies."

King Jim, apparently, "gives the crowd exactly what they want". If what they want is politically incorrect twaddle from a comedic dinosaur who has more in common with the like of the ghastly Bernard Manning than today's rising stars of comedy.

Richard Herring came to Hastings to dispel some myths about bigotism. Don't expect Davidson to do the same.

In the spirit of balance, many people say they find his unashamed shock tactics re-freshing in an era of political correctness gone mad. He also does a lot of work entertaining our troops, which he should be hugely commended for.

Probably best you make your own minds up.

For me though, the thought of Jim Davidson ruling the World – and of what sort of world that would be – fills me with nothing but dread.

The day Davidson rules the World is the day I check myself onto the first flight to Mars.

That said, if Planet Davidson included 24 hour screenings of Big Break I might be won over.

Tickets, priced 20, are on sale from the box office (01424 462288 or online at www.whiterocktheatre.org.uk).
