Do South Eastern really run ghost trains?

On going to Battle station recently, to meet someone, I experienced something rather strange I had seen before.

The expected train was displayed on the information board as being on time, the level crossing gates north of the station closed, then the information board showed the train had ‘arrived’ but no train, After a while the next train was announced, but still no train. After a few minutes a train did arrive which could have been the earlier one which had ‘arrived’ but didn’t, or the next train arriving early. I did comment on this strange event to someone else on the platform who commented that this could be a way for the ‘punctuality’ performance data to be adjusted, but surely this could not be the case or do South Eastern Trains really run ghost trains?
