Promises are unravelling

As agent for the Rother Stronger IN campaign, may I thank everyone who supported our campaign and who voted for Remain in such encouraging numbers in Rother.

I am proud of the result we achieved here despite being on the losing side. In particular I was pleased by the coming together in common cause of members of at least four political parties. I can only hope that presages the ability for us all to work together in the future to avoid the descent of politics especially at the local level into its previous partisan and tribal ways.

The sadness, and indeed perhaps rage I feel now is that we are now seeing the promises made by the Leave campaign unravelling.

Already we have heard from prominent members of the Brexit campaign, Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage and Daniel Hannan for instance, that the claim that leaving the EU would release £350m a week to be spent on the NHS was ‘a mistake’ and that ‘if people think there is going to be zero immigration from the EU, they are going to be disappointed’. And this letter has been written less than 72 hours after the result of the referendum was known.
