Stand together against hatred

We in the local Labour Party have been disgusted by the actions of some people in other parts of the country against Polish people.

We have a large Polish community in Hastings and Rother, many of whom may be feeling unsettled at this uncertain time. All political leaders have condemned the hate crimes which had Polish people being handed cards saying ‘go home Polish vermin’ and the main Polish Community Centre in the UK, Posk in Hammersmith was daubed with racist slogans.

Without Polish airmen we would have had great difficulty winning the Battle of Britain in WWII. Their role has often been overlooked.

I am married to the son of a Polish Airman, Paul Franczak.

On Tuesday night, a motion of solidarity with the Polish community was passed, and we have been able to get it translated into Polish.

It reads: “Many Polish people have made Hastings and Rother area their home and have made a major contribution to the British economy and society.

“But since the EU Brexit vote, fear and division has been sown by a few people in the UK who wish to foster hate not friendship. We condemn these hate crimes unequivocally. Hastings is your home and you will always be welcome in our community. We will stand in solidarity with you against racist actions and will do all in our power to help you to feel welcome and safe particularly in these unsettled times.

“Yours in friendship, Hastings and Rye Labour Party.”
