Beth Tweddle opens 1066 Gymnasts Acadamy

THE 1066 Gymnasts Academy was officially opened by world gymnast champion Beth Tweddle on Saturday.

Prior to cutting the ribbon Beth was presented with a bouquet of flowers and spoke of her delight at opening the new 10,550 square foot gym, situated at Brett Drive.

Beth said: "It's great to see a gym like this. It is fantastic and has amazing facilities."

Beth, who at the age of 24 has already had an incredible career as a gymnast. She has amassed an impressive array of achievements and titles which include representing Great Britain at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Her talents on the Asymmetric Bars lead to her becoming both European and World Champion in 2006 and at this years European Championships Beth took the gold medals on Floor and Asymmetric bars.

To date Beth's hard work, determination and dedication as a gymnast has lead to her being crowned the Women's British Champion an incredible seven consecutive times and she is an inspiration to young gymnasts.

Speaking of her personal hopes for the future and for the youngsters who train at the academy Beth, who started gymnastics at the age of seven, said:

"This new gym is a great inspiration for kids and I'm sure there are many new stars here today; I hope to see some of these stars at the 2016 and 2012 Olympics - but you can't have the 2012 Olympics – that's my spot!"

Answering a question from one of the acadamys young gymnasts on what it felt like to go to the Olympics, Beth replied: "It's an athletes dream to compete at the Olympic Games."

After the opening ceremony 1066 Gymnasts Academy proprietor Matthew Hart and Beth announced there would be a future annual presentation of a very special award at the acadamy to be known as the 'Beth Tweddle Award'.

Beth said: "To be a top gymnast you need to be determined and put everything into it. Therefore the award will be presented each year to the most determined gymnast."

Beth and guests were then treated to a number of stunning energetic displays by some of the gyms talented gymnasts (aged between four and fifteen) which included floor, beam and parallel bar routines, training segments of bars, trampoline, tumble and rings, and ended with a freestyle gymnastics demonstration.
