Beuys is at the DLWP

A NEW show by acclaimed German artist Joespeh Beuys opens in the De La Warr Pavilion this weekend.

Works by Beuys, who died in 1986, will be introduced by Sir Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate, this evening (Friday), before offically opening in both galleries on Saturday.

The exhibition displays a large number of sculptures, photographs, drawings, and watercolours as well as a selection of posters recalling live actions and events by Beuys.

Key works will include Fat Chair (sculpture, 1964 – 85). Gallery Two, upstairs, will house Scala Napoletana (sculpture, 1985), shown for the first time in the UK.

In addition nearly twenty notable multiples (unlimited copies) are included within the exhibition selected from National Galleries of Scotland. The multiple was a form of communication for Beuys – a means by which he could share and distribute his ideas beyond the confines of the artworld.

A full list of works will be available on www.dlwp.com when confirmed.

A spokesperson from the De La Warr said: "This is an exciting opportunity to show work by Beuys within a building whose architecture, like the work of the artist, is rooted in socialist ideals and whose purpose is to provide a cultural centre for its locality and beyond.

"An ambition of the Beuys exhibition in Bexhill is to initiate inter-generational discussion, bringing a community together whilst inviting expertise and commentators from the fields of philosophy, environment, politics, economics and art."

Beuys Is Here runs at the Pavilion from July 4-September 27. For information, please contact the box office on 01424 229 111.
