Bikers still a problem in Rye area says angry motorist
A Peasmarsh woman is calling for greater controls on motorcyclists after being delayed by hundreds of riders at Rye.
Pauline Smith said: "I was trying to drive through Rye on a Saturday morning earlier this month and it was impossible.
"Traffic was being held up by motorcycles - there must have been a thousand of them on the A259.
They were cutting across and parking on the round-about, by the fish and chip shop.
"There was no police anywhere to control them, they were just doing as they liked.
"It was a delay of more than 20 minutes and cars were sounding their horns because they could not get through. We should not have to put up with this.
"Every Sunday at Peasmarsh we have bikes screaming through the village at 70 mph. It is very dangerous and the police should take action."
Police have been active in tackling the issue of speeding bikes and anti-social riding.
Warning signs on the A259 at Rye graphically point out the possible fatal consequences of speeding through bends and police have used mobile camera patrols.
Rye police launched an operation to respond to community concerns over speeding motorcycles during the summer months.
Public concern over speeding was identified by the police Priority Setting Panels and has led to Operation Ryeridesafe.
Last month saw Rye officers in action in two teams across the area.
They were supported by police motor cycles from the Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit.
Sergeant John Berry said: "The success of this operation is demonstrated by the fact that we have seen a notable reduction in calls concerning speeding motor cycles this year and have had some very positive feedback from the local community as a result of Operation Ryeridesafe.
Bikers who ride with respect for local residents are welcome to visit Rye. Those who do not will be dealt with accordingly."
