Blaze rips through Camber home

Camber fire

Camber fire

A FAMILY have been left homeless after fire ripped through the Camber house they were in the process on renovating.

Firefighters received a call-out to the beach-front property at The Suttons, camber Sands, just after 11pm on Saturday night.

Rye officer in charge Phil Bryant said: “The initial call was to a shed alight, but the fire quickly spread to the building.”

The family evacuated safely and no-one was injured. The family are now staying with friends.

Four fire engines were involved in bringing the blaze under control.

Two units from Rye were backed up by units from fire stations at Broad Oak and The Ridge, at Hastings.

Phil Bryant commented: “It was punishing conditions due to the severity of the fire.”

Fire crews were still at the scene damping down at 10.20am on Sunday morning.

A police spokesman said this week that the cause of the fire had not yet been established and that the Fire Service were carrying out an investigation.

The Fire Service later said they believed it to be accidental.

Local PCSO Dan Bevan captured this picture which shows the extent of the damage.

He said: We are working closely with the family to help them. It was devastating. All the doors and windows were lost and they lost a lot of property.”
