BONFIRE societies from the Rye and Battle area were on the march on Saturday when they travelled to Hastings to take part in the town’s big bonfire celebrations.

They joined a long torch-lit procession that wound its way through the narrow streets of the Old Town before travelling along the seafront to the fire site on Hastings beach.

Taking part were societies from Rye. Battle, Staplecross, Robetrtsbridge and Icklesham (pictured).

Bonfire season in the Rye and Battle area starts at Staplecross on Saturday October 27.

Battle holds its bonfire celebrations on Saturday November 3. Battle has one of the oldest bonfire traditions in Sussex, ranking alongside Lewes. The Robin Hood Bonfire Society, at Icklesham, holds its bonfire on Monday November 5, in the field adjacent to the Robin Hood pub on the A259 and is a smaller celebration, suitable for families.

Rye has its procession and bonfire on Saturday November 10 and the season comes to a close the Saturday after that when the spotlight switches to Robertsbridge.
