Business group warns of council tax scam

A scam is doing the rounds offering people a refund on their council tax.

Locals across Hastings are being targeted by the cold caller, who rings up claiming to be from the council.

They offer a refund in council tax, explaining the person's home had been put in the wrong banding or that the banding has been changed.

The caller then asks for their bank details in order to refund the money by direct debit – with the intention of cleaning out their account.

Members of the 1066 Federation of Small Buinesseses have reported the scam to the authorities after a number of the group were on the receiving end of the calls.
