Con man tricks pensioner

POLICE are hoping this image might help trace a bogus water company official who conned his way into a home and stole from an elderly woman.

A man called at the home of an 84 year old woman on Windmill Avenue Hassocks at about 3.30pm on April 26.

The intruder told the woman he was from and explained he was from the "water board" and there was a water leak at a nearby property.

He claimed he was knocking all doors to advise the residents that he would be shutting off the water supply.

Asking to look under the sink for the stopcock he followed the pensioner into the kitchen and obstructed her view of the living room.

After about five minutes the caller left, saying he was going to speak to the neighbours. Money was subsequently found to have been stolen, although no accomplice was seen.

Police say the suspect is a white man in his mid-20s, about 6ft tall, slim, with short dark hair, and clean shaven. At the time of the crime he was wearing blue trousers and navy blue jumper with a red 'JS' motif.

Anyone who thinks they can assist police, should please contact DC Dan Richardson of Mid Sussex CID on 0845 60 70 999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting Operation Inroad. They may be eligible for a reward.
