Countdown to Rye bonfire

THE countdown is well underway for Rye's bonfire celebrations next Saturday (November 12).

Bonfire Society chairman John Izod says everything is in place for one of the town's highlights of the year.

The Rye Society lent a helping hand to Saturday's bonfire celebrations at Staplecross, arriving with a lorry load of wooden pallets to build the huge fire on the recreation ground.

A strong Rye contingent then took part in the procession and will be present at Battle Bonfire tomorrow (Saturday) night.

The route at Rye will remain the same as in recent years with the torch-lit procession leaving Tilling Green and making its way along Cinque Ports Street and the High Street, before looping back along Cinque Ports Street to the fire-site on the Salts.

A top secret celebrity has been lined up to take the role of Rye Fawkes and perform the honour of lighting the fire before more than 2,000 worth of fireworks fill the night sky.

Last year's event raised 1,000, which has now ben distributed to local charities and good causes.

Entries for floats this year are welcome, provided they are towed by a 4 x 4 vehicle, not a tractor. Floats will be positioned at the rear of the procession. All entries must book in advance via the Society's secretary, Ian Foster at Adams, 8, High Street, Rye.

John Izod said: "Rye Bonfire and torchlit procession has become one of the great family events in the local calendar. Many months of hard work and preparation are put in by society members from fund raising to torch making and building the ultimate bonfire."

Rye Bonfire Society is looking for new people to join. Membership is 3 for individuals, 5 families and 1 juniors. Forms are available from Adams of Rye Ltd, 8 High Street, Rye, East Sussex TN31 7JH - 01797 223136 daytime.
