Deputy appointed despite disapproval

THE POLICE and Crime Commissioner for Sussex has appointed her chosen deputy - despite the move not being recommended by the panel which scrutinises her work.

Katy Bourne has gone ahead with the appointment of Steve Waight as her deputy despite the Sussex Police and Crime Panel not recommending the move.

Panel chairman Brad Watson said the panel felt Mr Waight would not be able to devote enough time to the role because of his council commitments.

Mr Waight is a West Sussex county councillor and an Adur and Worthing borough councillor.

He was also the chairman of the Sussex Police Authority before it was disbanded.

Mr Watson told the Observer: “We felt there would be time constraints between his local government role and the deputy position.

“Therefore we did not recommend it.

“We may be able to scrutinise the role of the deputy in the future.

“Our next meeting will be in June.”

One of Mr Waight’s primary tasks will be assisting Mrs Bourne to compile a police operating budget for the forthcoming financial year.

And Mrs Bourne is standing by her decision to appoint him.

A statement on her website read: “I am grateful for the considerations of the panel regarding my proposed appointment.

“I have now carefully considered their points and have decided to formally appoint Steve Waight as deputy commissioner.

“I am confident that his proven ability and experience will enable him to fulfil the role to the high standard required.

“He has a proven track record at a senior level in police governance, public sector finance and working with local people and communities.

Furthermore, I am confident that his public duties as a councillor will enhance his role.”
