Driver’s lucky escape as tree crushes car
A DRIVER was “extremely lucky” to escape serious injury after a 50ft tree crashed onto his car.
The man’s windscreen was smashed and the car roof was crushed by the giant tree, which came down in high winds on Monday evening.
But miraculously the driver escaped with just cuts to his head.
The man, who is believed to be aged in his 60s and from Battle, was driving along the A2100 when the tree came crashing down close to Solomon’s Lane, Mountfield, at around 7.30pm.
The shocked driver, who was the only person in the car, managed to climb out of the back passenger door.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but to the amazement of paramedics, the man only suffered minor injuries.
Paramedic Practitioner Daryl Devlia said: “A lucky escape is an understatement and does not cut it.
“I understand the patient just managed to see the tree from the lights on another vehicle and then managed to get out the back of his own car.”
The man suffered abrasions to his head and complained of something in his eye, but after an assessment in the back of the ambulance, he was not taken to hospital.
Mr Devlia added: “It’s amazing he avoided serious injury and we all wish him a speedy recovery.”
Police Community Support Officer Tina Grevett arrived at the scene after attending reports of another fallen tree at Bodiam.
She said the man was “extremely shaken”.
PCSO Grevett said: “He had a head injury but he went into the ambulance and was given the all clear.
“He was an extremely lucky man.”
The A2100 was closed for a couple of hours as emergency services cleared the scene.
