Girls gather for World Thinking Day

EIGHTY-FIVE girls and young women aged from five to 75 met at the Battle District Guide Headquarters to celebrate World Thinking Day on Friday February 22.

During the course of the afternoon girls from Crowhurst, Sedlescombe, Guestling, Pett and Battle, met new friends, shared stories and laughter and heard the story of how Girlguiding began in 1910.

Thinking Day is the day when Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section members Adult leaders and Trefoil Guild members think about their equivalent members all over the World.

There are 145 countries who are full or affiliated members of WAGGGS (World association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts).

Each girl held a lighted candle in remembrance of areas of the World where Guiding is struggling against poverty and politics. Afterwards they enjoyed a variety of crafts; an opportunity to sing songs, and of course, to eat cake.

Girls took the opportunity to meet the leaders of the unit they will move on to echoing the new 2013 Girlguiding strapline ‘We Discover We Grow Girlguiding’. Occasions like this make the transition from Rainbows to Brownies and then on to Guides so much easier.

Vikki Cook said: “In Girl Guiding we are proud that because we are for all girls; We can give girls their own space and provide a chance to give girls a voice.

“Although 103 years old through adapting and amending our programmes we change as the lives of girls change.

“If you would like to join as an adult volunteer or have a girl who would like to join a unit near your home/workplace or school please contact www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested or phone 08001695901.”
