Guerilla knitters to descend on Rye

A RADICAL group of guerilla knitters are set to cause a domestic disturbance in Rye when they set out to ‘yarn-bomb’ the town.

The mystery knitters are playing a key role in the Domestic Disturbance arts event, which takes place next month .

It has been organised by the School Creative Centre to celebrate International Women’s Day and raise funds for local women’s refuges.

There will be two free knitting sessions at the School Creative Centre, New Road, Rye, on Saturday February 23 and Sunday March 3 from 2pm - 4pm.

The aim is to create strands of knitting or crochet, and knitted or crocheted surprises, to be woven in and along fences, and hung from trees, from Rye town centre to The School Creative Centre on Friday March 8.

Domestic Disturbance will be an evening of entertainment, displays and exhibitions of art and film, refreshments, and more knitting, with proceeds going to Hastings, Eastbourne and Weald Women’s Refuge.

Organiser Wendy Harvey said: “Yarn, needles and hooks will be supplied. Any donations will be gratefully received but your company is essential! If you can’t wait until these events and want to get started cast on as many, or few, stitches as you like and get knitting or crocheting in whatever washable yarn you like as we want to bury Rye in knitting and crochet! All the strips will eventually be made into blankets and donated to the Refuge.
