Help food charity this harvest time

TIMES are tough economically, which means many families are struggling to put food on the table.

Mindful of this, Battle Baptist Church is making a community-wide Harvest appeal for non-perishable food which it will pass on to Hastings Foodbank, an organisation which helps to feed local people in crisis.

From pasta to puddings, and biscuits to beans, anything is welcome, as long as it is non-perishable and within its sell-by-date.

Dennis Nolan, the Baptist Church Pastor, said: “Over a 12-month period in 2011/12, foodbanks fed 128,687 people nationwide.

“This was 100 per cent more than in the previous 12 months.

“More than ever there is a great need to support those who go hungry.

“So, I am appealing to everyone in Battle to help us collect together an amazing amount of food.

“We are holding a special Harvest Service at Claverham Community College on Sunday October 7 at 10.30am.

“Everyone is welcome to come and bring food.

“It should be an exciting time as the community gathers together in support of families who are really struggling.”

If you cannot make the service, please leave non-perishable food items at the Battle Baptist Church offices in Mount Street.

Entirely supported by volunteers, with donations of food coming from local schools, businesses, churches and individuals, Hastings Foodbank serves rural areas too and runs a delivery service taking emergency food to people who cannot afford to travel into Hastings.

Examples of food you can donate: pasta, tea, coffee, tins and jars of food, biscuits, flour, UHT milk, rice, sugar, cartons of longlife juice, packets of soup. These must be within their sell-by-date.

For more information, ring the church on 01424 774 825, or the Foodbank on 07970 810008.
