Investment needed to help revitalise deprived Camber
A NEW plan to revitalise Camber will only work if Rother Council makes a substantial investment in the village.
That was the view of Rye councillors when they commented on the plan on Monday evening.
Councillors were critical of Rother for making money from Camber car parks while not giving anything back to the local community.
A core part of the plan calls for Camber to establish closer links with Rye, Rye Harbour and the Shepway district.
Rye councillor Mike Eve said: “Rother owns the putting green and central car park in Camber. The perception is that Rother milks Camber for income but puts little back in terms of investment.
“The community at Camber suffers considerably from deprivation and does not have the economic ability to change its fortunes.
“Implementing this plan will require a great deal of capital and infrastructure spend from Rother District Council.
“It will also need strong leadership from Rother if it is going to happen.”
Traffic generation in the summer is still an issue.
Cllr Adam Smith said: “My biggest concern about Camber is the impact it has on Rye during the summer when roads around our town are often gridlocked.
“The highway infrastructure needs looking at in detail.
Cllr Mike Eve said; “Part of the purpose of the plan is to make Camber more attractive to visitors at out of season times when it is not so popular.”
