New campaign promotes breastfeeding
BREASTFEEDING is being promoted to new and expectant families across East Sussex this week.
Partners in the PCTs and East Sussex County Council have joined forces to run an information campaign.
It is featuring on local radio and there is a program of activities and information in hospitals, health centres and children centres.
Although natural and free, breastfeeding is not always easy with some mums giving up before they would choose to. But health experts says breastfeeding brings benefits to both mum and baby and it is hoped this campaign will ensure that help, support and information is available for mums-to-be.
Joanne Bernhaut, NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald's consultant in public health, said, "Breast milk is the only food that exactly meets the unique needs of a baby, especially for the first six months of life, but it can also continue to benefit babies along with solid foods for many months after.
"It has the perfect amount of nutrients to help babies grow.
"It contains antibodies that protect babies from infection and they will be less likely to develop allergies and other problems.
"It even changes to suit the different needs of babies as they grow. There are lots of reasons to give it a go."
New mum Jessica Frith has just had her baby, Lenny, at Eastbourne DGH and said, "I have been very lucky as Lenny latched on quickly. I think it is absolutely amazing and a really good part of bonding with him."
