New Link Road is no solution to hold-ups
“Link road will cure appalling hold-ups” (Letters, 7/9/12). No it won’t!
Mr Hume may remember traffic congestion at Gas Works Corner (Glyne Gap) in the 1960s. Little has changed since then, nor will it with ‘Ravenside’, as only about 1 in 20 vehicles running from Bulverhythe towards Little Common is through traffic; the rest is local. This is easily proved by observing the vehicles ahead, systematically peeling off en route. The largely empty Pevensey by-pass illustrates this as residents of the thousands of new Eastbourne homes gradually congest the ‘freed up’ roads into the town (likewise the M25), as prophesied in Parkinson’s Law of Inevitability! Indeed, Cllr Ian Jenkins points out that new homes will be required for those migrating to Hastings to fill the new factory vacancies - not for those currently unemployed or homeless!
Will the link road improve our local economy? Nope! But if we resurrected Pebsham aerodrome for STOL commuter jet aeroplanes, that would make good use of the link road, ease suffering on those near Lydd and London’s third runway and support an HS3 upgrade to a Charing Cross, Brighton and Ashford International, meeting this ‘Conservative’ government’s policies. How about it Amber Rudd, MP?
The irony is that the most vociferous ‘Nimbys’ are often those who have moved into newly developed properties on virgin green land, destroying the very countryside they sought. One which Mr Hume’s “minority of selfish people” fought so hard to preserve for future generations, which allowed him to enjoy his childhood exploration of Coombe Haven, and his now protected Hackney Marshes - areas intentionally protected under post-war Town & Country Planning Acts. So woe betide any politician who dares to further destroy our precious countryside, or culvert every watercourse, merely to concrete it over to house an unsustainable population growth.
We, that’s all of us, are privileged guardians of our precious countryside for future generations. Don’t let us destroy it, for once it has gone, it’s gone - for good.
