People have say at Town Meeting
ROAD chaos, potholes and eye-sore sites in Rye were all voiced as concerns by the public when Rye Town Council held its annual Town Meeting at the School Creative Centre on Monday night.
The meeting gives Rye residents an opportunity to quiz councillors, ask questions and raise issues.
Around 60 members of the electorate attended the meeting which was good natured and productive.
Notably almost half of Rye’s 16 town councillors were unable to attend the meeting, including the town’s two district councillors.
The meeting heard a presentation from Rye College Principal Ann Cockerham on plans for the new Rye Studio School, which opens its doors in September this year.
Work is already underway on the College site to incorporate the new school.
Mrs Cockerham described the new school as “pioneering” and said it will be one of only 30 Studio Schools in the country .
Colonel Anthony Kimber, from Rye emergency group REACT, gave an overview of the group’s works and the many issues that still need addressing.
He pointed out that the building used for the meeting was in fact below the flood line and at risk of flooding.
Resident called for more action to improve roads and traffic problems in the town.
Rye county councillor Keith Glazier told the assembly that work would begin shortly on resurfacing Udimore Road, Cinque Ports Street, Ropewalk and Tower Street, all of which are littered with potholes.
