Recycling is saving on landfill waste

RECYCLING centres in Sussex saved 13,500 tonnes more waste from going into landfill this year compared to 2011.

Veolia Environmental Services, which has 14 sites across East Sussex, said the proportion of waste diverted away from landfill had increased from 71.2 percent to 92.4 percent.

The amount of green waste residents have brought to sites for composting increased by 6.7 percent, or the equivalent of 48 double decker buses, on the previous year.

Between January and August this year 11,300 tonnes of green waste , 2,500 of metal and 1,000 of glass became new products or compost.
