Rugby team's clubhouse dream

THE future of Rye Rugby Club depends on whether it can win a race against time to get a new clubhouse.

The club plays a vital role in youth development in Rye, providing training facilities for more than 100 youngsters.

But the young players will lose out unless the bid for the 200,000 facility succeeds.

The cause is being supported by Spike Milligan's widow Sheelagh. There are plans to name the new club house after Spike who was vice president and a great supporter of the club, even turning out to play in a charity match at the age of 80.

Julie Denman, chairman of the fund-raising committee, explained the Club's plight.

"Rother District Council has informed us that our Portakabin has to be removed from the current playing fields by the end of the month unless we start building our new clubhouse.

"We have applied to the Rughy Football Union for a 100,000 loan to help us build our clubhouse, however they will only consider our application if the club proves that it is actively fund raising and has more than 40,000 in its bank account by May.

"If we do not have this money we will not be considered for a loan and will be left with nothing but a playing field and two rugby posts."

Sue Nunn, from the club, said: "A new clubhouse would provide us with proper shower facilities, a bar and cooking facilities.

"It would enable us to entertain visiting sides and could be hired out for children's parties or community events."

She added: "We have had some great support for the appeal, including two shirts donated by former British Lions which we can put up for auction, but we still need to raise more if we are to get our club house."

The club has a number of events coming up at its New Road ground, including a social gathering on May 7 and the Rother District Tag Festival on May 19, in which 400 children are set to take part.

There will be food, drinks and a marquee at the Festival and the club is trying to invite pop band Keane to show up and sign autographs.

The club is also in the process of arranging a fun speed dating event.
