Rye councillor Sam pays respects at the sea-faring service at St Paul’s Cathedral

FORMER Rye Cllr Sam Souster travelled to St Paul’s Cathedral recently to attend the annual Seafarers Service.

Cllr Souster is a former merchant seaman himself and while Mayor played a key role in handing out a new service medal to merchant seamen who had served in the last World War.

He was among those among those representing the Merchant Mariners’ Federation at the London service , which is particularly appropriate given Rye’s long and historic association with seafaring in all its forms.

The first service was held in 1905 and has continued with some gaps for war years, celebrating its 100 years anniversary in October 2005.almost all branches of our seafarers were represented to give thanks for service and sacrifice past and prayers and hopes for the future.

Cllr Souster said: “It was an impressive occasion attended by, among others, The Princess Royal and the Lord Mayor Locum Tenens with music supplemented by the Band of the Royal Marines Commando Training Centre and a large choir of schools associated with naval services.

“The sermon was a stark reminder of what we owe to the Merchant Navy, the Royal Navy and our fishermen who take on the sea at its most elemental, and poignant reminder of those who “went to the sea in ships” often giving their all during two World Wars - something to keep in mind at Remembrance Day.”
