RYE and District Lions are helping safeguard the future of an important local service by donating £2,000 to Rye Community Transport over the past three years.

The Lions made another recent donation of £500 to the service.

Rye Community Transport plays a vital role in helping elderly people and those with mobility problems to attend medical appointments, community events and shops.

The latest donation comes from money raised at their various fund-raising events over the last summer, when they attended six different fetes and shows with their stalls and also from their very successful Rye Raft Race and Fete.

Over the last year they have donated over £13,000 to various charities and needy causes. At their October meeting they also agreed to make donations of £250 to Crisis at Christmas and £250 to Rye Age Concern.

Over the last year 75 percent of their donations went to local charities, 18 percent to national appeals and 7 percent to international causes.

Rye Lions President, Malcolm McDonough, said “The Lions believe that Rye Community Transport provides a valuable service to the people of Rye, its neighbouring villages and to school children.

“They also kindly provide transport for the one hundred senior citizens when they attend the Sunday lunch that the Lions provide for them every April.

In fact, the Lions regularly hire one of Rye Community Transport’s buses for some of their social events, so they can feel free to have a drink”.

The Lions would like to thank the residents of Rye and the nearby villages for their support at their fund-raising events over the summer.

Any adult interested in findin out more about the Lions or considering joining them in having fun whilst raising money for those less fortunate and would enjoy a monthly social event, should ring 01797 252382 or have a look at their website at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/ryedistrict/ .

Rye and District Community Transport operate a fully accessible 16 seater minibus Dial A Ride service which is available to community groups and voluntary organisations to hire.

They are based at Rye Wharf on Rye Harbour Road.

All their drivers are fully trained.
