Rye is up for top recycling award
Rye is up for a top recycling award thanks to the efforts of Rye and District Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber has been selected as a "Best High Street Recycler" finalist for the National Recycling Awards for its successful scheme to recycle cardboard.
Sara Nixon, Cardboard Co-ordinator, said, "I am really thrilled. We are a volunteer team and the whole town, residents and businesses, can make use of the facility we offer.
The one hour a week when we receive cardboard has a real community spirit and to be chosen as a national finalist proves that a simple scheme can work and impact significantly.
Businesses have made great savings on disposal costs and large quantities of cardboard are no longer going to landfill."
The scheme, launched in October 2005, has recycled over 100,000 kg of cardboard.
The Chamber would like to remind those bringing cardboard to make sure it is brought flattened.
The scheme cannot take milk or juice cartons.
Only bring cardboard on Thursdays between 5pm-6pm to Jempson Budgens loading bay. Sara Nixon said: "Leaving cardboard at any other time could jeopardise the scheme for everyone."

The rota works out at about one hour every seven weeks.
